In the quiet community of North Charleston, South Carolina, the life of Al-Jaami Asa Sweet, a 40-year-old Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On the first day of October in 2017, Sweet was discovered in the driveway of a residence on Hunters Ridge Lane, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a local hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving a family and community to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
The North Charleston Police Department, in conjunction with the Dorchester County Coroner's Office, launched a thorough investigation into the homicide. Their efforts were focused on piecing together the events that led to the shooting and identifying the individual responsible for this act of violence. The community waited, hopeful for a breakthrough that would bring a measure of justice for Sweet.
Weeks later, on October 19, 2017, a significant development emerged in the case. Law enforcement officials, including North Charleston Police and U.S. Marshals, apprehended 21-year-old Jaquez Gabriel Brown. He was taken into custody on Goer Drive, behind Sea Island Linens. Brown was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the death of Al-Jaami Asa Sweet. It was also revealed that at the time of his arrest, Brown was on probation for a 2013 attempted murder charge that had been reduced to assault and battery following a guilty plea in 2015.
