In a tragic turn of events stemming from a dispute over a video game, 31-year-old Jesse Weathers lost his life in a North Charleston, South Carolina motel room. The incident unfolded on April 27, 2018, at a Rodeway Inn where Weathers was playing video games with 19-year-old Daniel Reed. An argument erupted between the two, escalating to a point where Reed fatally shot Weathers twice.
Following the shooting, Reed fled the scene in Weathers' car, leaving the motel room door ajar.
Hours later, a motel employee discovered Weathers' body in a pool of blood and alerted the authorities. The subsequent investigation quickly identified Reed as the primary suspect.
The day after the murder, police spotted Weathers' stolen vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Reed, however, sped away, leading to a police chase. After crashing the car, Reed and a juvenile passenger attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended after a manhunt. During questioning, Reed confessed to his involvement in the homicide and revealed that he had discarded the murder weapon, a handgun, in a wooded area while running from the police. Officers were later able to recover the firearm.
The juvenile who was with Reed at the time of his arrest denied any involvement in the shooting. He was charged with disturbing the peace and was subsequently released to his parents. Daniel Reed faced a series of serious charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, grand larceny, and failure to stop for blue lights. He was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center, where he was held without bond.
