On a summer evening in Pelion, South Carolina, the life of 38-year-old Aaron Matthew Peterson was brought to a violent end. On July 23, 2018, Peterson was shot multiple times in the upper body at a residence on Sandspur Road. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Two other individuals were also wounded in the shooting; one sustained serious injuries while the other's were considered non-life-threatening.
The investigation into the triple shooting quickly led law enforcement to a
person of interest. Bradley Wayne Walker, a 26-year-old from Newton, North Carolina, was identified as the suspect. He was located shortly after the incident with severe burns. Investigators also found a burned car belonging to Walker that matched the description of the vehicle seen fleeing the scene of the crime. After receiving medical treatment for his burns, Walker was arrested and charged with murder, three counts of attempted murder, and possessing a weapon during a violent crime.
The motive behind the deadly shooting appeared to be rooted in a complex personal relationship. Reports suggested that the incident stemmed from an attempt by Aaron Peterson and his wife to engage in a polyamorous relationship with Walker. Prosecutors argued that when this arrangement did not work out, an enraged Walker attacked the Peterson's mobile home.
In early 2023, Bradley Wayne Walker was found guilty of the murder of Aaron Peterson and the wounding of three other people, including a small child. He was subsequently sentenced to 45 years in prison. In a surprising turn of events, some of Aaron Peterson's family members, including his mother and daughter, later spoke out in support of Walker, expressing their belief that he was not responsible for Peterson's death and that a miscarriage of justice had occurred.
