In the late summer of 2018, the life of 63-year-old David Stephen Silvey, a man known for his faith and love for his family, was tragically cut short. On Sunday, August 19th, in the Buffalo community of Union County, South Carolina, what began as a verbal dispute over a parked car escalated into a fatal encounter. Silvey, who was riding a four-wheeler, became involved in an argument with a man he had never met before.
That man was 27-year-old Joshua McKenzie Miles.
The disagreement centered around a car that was blocking a back alley, a vehicle that belonged to neither man. As sheriff's deputies were responding to calls about a man on a four-wheeler pointing a gun at people, the situation quickly devolved. Before law enforcement could arrive, shots were fired. When deputies reached the scene, they found David Stephen Silvey lying on the road next to his four-wheeler, having been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath, a reserve deputy took Joshua McKenzie Miles into custody. He was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges for his alleged role in the shooting. The charges brought against Miles were murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Following his arrest, Miles was transported to the Union County Detention Center, where he was denied bond.
