In the early afternoon of February 23, 2020, a dispute in Buffalo, South Carolina, ended in the tragic death of 45-year-old Christopher Lee Hall. A white male, Hall had gone to a residence on South Street to retrieve his personal belongings from a home he had previously shared with an ex-girlfriend. An argument broke out between Hall and his former partner, escalating to the point where she called for assistance.
John Robert Arnette, also 45 years old, responded to the call for help.
A physical altercation ensued between Hall and Arnette. During the confrontation, Arnette produced a firearm and shot Hall in the chest. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Union County deputies arrived to find Hall with a serious gunshot wound.
Hall was initially transported to Union Medical Center for treatment. Due to the severity of his injury, he was subsequently airlifted to Spartanburg Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Christopher Lee Hall succumbed to his wound and was pronounced dead. An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was the gunshot wound to his chest.
At the scene of the shooting, law enforcement took John Robert Arnette into custody. He was initially charged with attempted murder. However, following Hall's death, the charges against Arnette were upgraded to murder. Arnette claimed that he acted in self-defense during the physical struggle with Hall. He was booked into the Union County Detention Center as the legal process and investigation into the shooting continued.
