In the late summer evening of August 25, 2018, the life of 12-year-old Fantasia Shyann Jackson was tragically cut short in Timmonsville, South Carolina. A Black female, Fantasia had just returned from the local fair and was dropped off at her grandparents' home around 11:30 p.m. Moments later, as she ran for cover in the yard, she was struck by gunfire and killed.
Her death was not a random act of violence but the culmination of a dispute that had begun earlier at a party.
The events leading to Fantasia's death started with an altercation at a party where a man named Cedric Young was beaten up. In retaliation, Young reportedly shot at a house. This act of violence led to further retribution when another man, later identified as Michael Christian Barclay, sought out Young. Upon finding him on a nearby street, Barclay opened fire, and in the chaos, Fantasia was fatally wounded. Fantasia's family remembered her as a sweet and kind girl with a beautiful smile, a child who had already overcome significant health challenges in her young life, including surviving a brain tumor diagnosed at age four and undergoing hip replacement surgery.
The investigation into Fantasia's death led to the arrest of three suspects. Michael Christian Barclay was apprehended in Brooklyn, New York, and charged with her murder. Two other men, Demonta Kabora Hickson and Jimmy Lee Hampton Jr., were also arrested and faced murder charges as co-defendants in the case. The Florence County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the senseless act that took the life of a young girl, leaving her family and community to mourn a life filled with promise that was violently extinguished.
