In the quiet town of Gaffney, South Carolina, the life of 23-year-old Overton Deshan Good was tragically cut short on the morning of Tuesday, October 2, 2018. A hail of bullets descended upon his mobile home on Pleasant School Road in a drive-by shooting, one of which struck him in the head, ending his life at the scene. Just a day before, he had been celebrating with his family, having returned from watching his brother, Denzelle Good, play for the NFL's Indianapolis Colts.
The events
of that fateful morning unfolded with chilling speed. Two men, later identified as 20-year-old Jermaine Jefferies and 18-year-old Shaun Rogers Jr., had reportedly attempted an armed robbery at Good's residence around 8:30 a.m. After Good turned them away, they drove off, only to circle back and unleash a barrage of gunfire at the home. In his final moments, Overton Good was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, managing to name one of his assailants before he was fatally wounded. A friend who was with him in the home at the time was unharmed.
The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office moved swiftly, arresting Jermaine Jefferies later that same day. Shaun Rogers Jr. was taken into custody the following day. Both men faced a string of serious charges, including murder, attempted murder, attempted armed robbery, first-degree burglary, shooting into a dwelling, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that had claimed the life of a young man, whose father, Richard Good, had once been a football coach to one of the accused, Jermaine Jefferies, and had tried to mentor him through a difficult period in his life.
