On November 9, 2018, 33-year-old Kori Karlton Capers, a Black/African American male, returned to his residence on Gulledge Street in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, after learning of a possible break-in. Upon arriving, he confronted armed intruders inside his home and was shot multiple times. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries eight days later, on November 17, 2018.
An autopsy confirmed that his death was the result of complications from three gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the homicide revealed that the home invasion was not a random act of violence. Authorities identified two teenage suspects, 18-year-old DeAnthony Karieem Simmons and 17-year-old Zion Rashaun Dukes. It was acknowledged by law enforcement that at least one of the teens knew Capers, though a specific motive for the burglary was not publicly disclosed as the investigation was ongoing. The Moncks Corner Police Department, in conjunction with the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, conducted a thorough investigation into the incident.
Both Simmons and Dukes were taken into custody following the incident. Initially, they faced attempted murder charges, as Capers was still alive when they were apprehended. However, after Capers passed away, authorities announced their intention to upgrade the charges against both teenagers to murder and first-degree burglary. It was also reported that Simmons confessed to his involvement in the crime. The case was one of two fatal shootings that occurred in Moncks Corner within a brief period, prompting the local police chief to hold a news conference to reassure the community that the incidents were isolated and not indicative of a wider threat to public safety.
