In the summer of 2019, a dispute that began in the intangible world of social media spiraled into a real-world tragedy, claiming the life of 16-year-old Devon Javon Curry. The young man, a resident of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was fatally shot in the chest on July 9, 2019, in a violent confrontation that unfolded at a Greenville County apartment complex.
The events of that fateful Tuesday night were reportedly triggered by an argument on Instagram.
This online feud escalated dramatically when Devon and an 18-year-old friend, Ke'Savious Keyshawn Elmore, drove to the apartment complex. An exchange of gunfire erupted between them and a group of teenagers in the parking lot shortly after 11:15 p.m. It was during this shootout, which involved two different handguns and a rifle and saw between 50 and 60 shots fired in a matter of minutes, that Devon sustained the fatal wound.
Instead of rendering aid to his wounded companion, Elmore allegedly fled the scene with Devon in the vehicle, only to leave his body on the side of a road in Greenville, approximately 10 miles from the site of the shootout. Around 11:40 p.m., a passerby discovered Devon's body behind a building and alerted the authorities. The Greenville County Senior Deputy Coroner confirmed that he was deceased at the scene.
The investigation that followed led to the arrests of three individuals. Ke'Savious Keyshawn Elmore was taken into custody and faced a litany of charges, including five counts of attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, criminal conspiracy, and discharging a firearm into a dwelling. Authorities also arrested 17-year-old Anthony O'Neal Martin, Jr., and another 16-year-old in connection with the deadly incident.
