In the early morning hours of November 4, 2019, a violent dispute erupted inside a residence in Clinton, South Carolina, resulting in the fatal shooting of 35-year-old Miguel Gutierrez-Mendoza. Authorities were alerted to the situation around 2:00 a.m. and dispatched deputies from the Laurens County Sheriff's Office to the home located on Highway 72 East. Upon their arrival, law enforcement officers discovered Gutierrez-Mendoza suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The investigation at the scene moved quickly as deputies identified a suspect who was also living at the residence. The victim's roommate, 20-year-old Osvaldo Antonio Flores, was detained by authorities at the home. Investigators determined that the shooting had stemmed from an altercation between the two men, which escalated when Flores allegedly produced a firearm and shot Gutierrez-Mendoza multiple times at close range.
Following the incident, Osvaldo Antonio Flores was arrested and taken to the Johnson Detention Center. He was formally charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
