In the quiet, early morning hours in rural Chester County, South Carolina, a tragic event unfolded that cut short the life of 37-year-old Latwanyept Shay LaShay Stover. It was around 4 a.m. on a Saturday in November 2019 when Stover was riding in her own 2015 BMW with a man from Fort Lawn named Brandon Ryan Roberts. The vehicle was near the Catawba River and the Lancaster County line, on U.S. 21 at S.C.
200, when Roberts, then 32, fatally shot her.
Following the shooting, Roberts was taken into custody by the Chester County Sheriff's Office. As the investigation progressed, he made admissions to the deputies regarding his involvement in Stover's death. Coupled with witness statements, this led to detectives formally charging him with murder. Roberts was subsequently held at the Chester County Detention Center without bond.
The legal process that followed brought a resolution to the case. In July 2021, Brandon Ryan Roberts, then 34, pleaded guilty to the murder of Latwanyept Lashay Stover. He was sentenced to serve 30 years in the South Carolina Department of Corrections for the crime. Reports indicated that Roberts had been incarcerated for a previous offense prior to the fatal shooting.
