In the quiet community of Centenary, South Carolina, the new year of 2020 was shattered by a brutal act of violence that claimed the lives of 45-year-old Maisha Burch and her companion, Andrew Legette. Their bodies were discovered in their home on Taft Watson Road, both having been fatally shot. The crime left the small town in shock and a family devastated, as Maisha was a mother to eight children.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to Isaac Hemingway, the father
of five of Maisha Burch's children. Though the initial days and weeks of the investigation were met with pleas from the Marion County Sheriff's Office for information from the public, Hemingway eventually became the primary suspect. The motive for the heinous crime appeared to be rooted in a desire to avoid financial responsibility, as Hemingway was reportedly facing significant child support obligations.
During his trial in February of 2023, the harrowing details of the murders were laid bare. Evidence presented a grim picture of the events that transpired on January 12, 2020. Andrew Legette was ambushed and shot twice as he slept on the couch. A violent struggle ensued in the hallway between Burch and her attacker, culminating in her being brutally beaten and shot five times.
Isaac Hemingway was subsequently convicted of the murders of Maisha Burch and Andrew Legette. Following the guilty verdict, he was sentenced to serve life in prison for his crimes. In late 2025, Hemingway's case was in the appeals process, as he continued to challenge the legal proceedings that led to his conviction and life sentence.
