On the evening of July 12, 2020, Chad Nicholas Westbury, a 39-year-old White male from Johns Island, South Carolina, was fatally shot. The incident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. following an altercation outside a Walgreens on Savannah Highway. Westbury was discovered unresponsive on the ground about half a mile from the scene of the shooting and was pronounced dead there.
He was a father of three boys and worked in construction as a craftsman and mechanic.
The investigation into Westbury's death led the Charleston County Sheriff's Office to seek information about a silver or tan pickup truck with an extended cab that was observed in the area at the time of the homicide. Witnesses reported seeing two men inside the truck: a white male in his late teens or early 20s with a 'bowl' haircut, and a Hispanic male who was armed with a handgun.
A significant development in the case came on August 10, 2020, when the Charleston County Sheriff's Office announced an arrest. A 16-year-old male was taken into custody and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Authorities continued to investigate to determine if other suspects were involved in the incident that led to Chad Westbury's death.
