In the summer of 2020, a dispute that reportedly began on social media escalated to violence, ending the life of a young man from Loris, South Carolina. Mequaia Denzel Haywood, a 27-year-old Black male, was shot on the evening of Tuesday, July 21, 2020. The incident took place on Ino Drive, a residential street in the Loris area.
Following the shooting, Haywood was rushed to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound to his abdomen.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that night. The Horry County Police Department launched a homicide investigation into the fatal shooting.
In the days following Haywood's death, details emerged suggesting the shooting may have been the tragic culmination of an argument that transpired on Facebook. However, law enforcement officials have remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the investigation. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made in connection with the shooting, nor have any suspects been officially named.
The community was left to mourn the loss of Mequaia Haywood as his case joined the ranks of unsolved homicides.
