Lorn Kyle Wofford, a 39-year-old male, was walking with his girlfriend on the morning of November 9, 2020, in Roebuck, South Carolina, when a silver Toyota 4Runner approached them. The driver, later identified as 72-year-old Kenneth Lewis, was the father of Wofford's girlfriend. Lewis drove by and fatally shot Wofford before driving away from the scene.
Wofford was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, authorities with the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation that quickly led them to Kenneth Lewis. Upon being questioned, Lewis confessed to the shooting. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The motive for the tragic event appears to stem from a belief held by Lewis that Wofford was to blame for burns his daughter had sustained from a kerosene heater just four days prior to the shooting. Reports from the sheriff's office indicated that Lewis's daughter had bandages on both of her hands and arms after being released from the Augusta Burn Center for her injuries.
Wofford, known to his loved ones as Kyle, was remembered as a man with a heart of gold who loved his family. Born in Spartanburg, he was a father to two daughters. His family described his death as a brutal and senseless murder. A memorial service was held to honor his memory at Blessed Hope Bible Church in Moore, South Carolina.
