In the quiet community of Hopkins, South Carolina, the life of 16-year-old Ryan Jeffrey Knight was abruptly cut short on the afternoon of January 7, 2021. Remembered as a typical teenager with a love for skateboarding, video games, and working on cars with his father, Ryan's death was the result of a violent encounter that unfolded on Horrell Hill Road.
The male teen was found on the road, having been pushed from a car and shot in the upper body.
For months, the Richland County Sheriff's Department investigated the fatal shooting. The turning point in the case came when investigators determined that the incident was not a random act of violence. According to law enforcement, the shooting stemmed from a drug deal that escalated into a robbery. This breakthrough led to the identification and arrest of two individuals in connection with Ryan's death.
Tyawn Antwan Martin, then 21 years old, was taken into custody and charged with the murder of Ryan Knight. Alongside Martin, a 17-year-old was also arrested and faced a charge of attempted armed robbery for their involvement in the incident that led to the teenager's demise. The investigation further revealed a grim connection to other violent crimes in the area. Ballistic evidence linked the 9mm handgun used to kill Ryan to another fatal shooting that occurred the following month, as well as several other shooting incidents dating back to 2018.
In the wake of this tragedy, Ryan's family, including his parents, six siblings, and grandparents, were left to mourn the profound loss of a young man with a 'golden spirit,' as one neighbor recalled. His death was noted by the Richland County Sheriff as one of 32 gun-related homicides in the county in 2021, a year that saw a significant increase in such violent crimes.
