The events of April 5, 2021, would leave a family shattered and a community in mourning. Just before midnight, deputies from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office arrived at a home on Eastern School Road, responding to a call concerning a domestic dispute.
There they found a 16-year-old boy who informed them that his mother, Shameka, was in the living room with his stepfather and her face was bloody.
As the deputies made their way into the living room, they saw Shameka and her husband, 41-year-old Lester Reed, sitting on the sofa. In a desperate plea, Shameka called out to the officers. In an instant, the situation escalated dramatically as Reed suddenly produced a handgun. The deputies quickly took cover and managed to get the teenager to safety. A single gunshot rang out, followed by a second shot just moments later.
When the deputies entered the living room, they discovered a horrific scene. It appeared that Lester Reed had shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Both Shameka Lashon Dantzler and Lester Reed were pronounced dead at the scene. The tragic event was classified as a murder-suicide by the authorities.
