Anthony 'AJ' Wiggins, a 34-year-old man, tragically lost his life on Sunday, August 15, 2021, in Hampton, South Carolina. The incident that led to his untimely death unfolded on Barry Avenue, where Hampton Police Department officers were called to the scene of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Wiggins had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the location, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the death of Wiggins quickly began to unfold as law enforcement officials started to piece together the events of that day. The Hampton Police Department, with assistance from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division worked to identify a person of interest. Their collaborative efforts led them to focus on an individual from Orangeburg.
Within a couple of days of the shooting, a suspect was taken into custody. The Hampton Police Department, continuing their joint investigation with SLED, identified and arrested Ja’Kobe K. Brown in connection with the death of Anthony Wiggins. Following his arrest, Brown was charged with murder and the possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. He was subsequently detained at the Hampton County Detention Center as he awaited legal proceedings. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately released to the public as the investigation continued. Friends and family of Wiggins were left to mourn the sudden and violent loss of their loved one, remembering him as a cherished member of their community.
