In the quiet community of Graniteville, South Carolina, the life of a beloved 50-year-old teacher, Dana Foster, was tragically cut short. On the evening of Wednesday, February 16, 2022, deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a shooting at her home on Chalk Bed Road. Upon their arrival, they made a grim discovery. The back door of the house showed signs of a forced entry, and inside, in the master bedroom, they found Foster's body on the floor.
She had been shot multiple times.
Investigators quickly pieced together evidence and witness statements that pointed to one individual: her 30-year-old son-in-law, Alexander Ambrose Carl of Gloverville. A search for Carl ensued, and he was located and taken into custody without incident shortly after leaving a residence on Red Rock Way, approximately 3.5 miles from the crime scene. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting. Carl was subsequently arrested and held at the Aiken County Detention Center.
Alexander Carl was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and first-degree burglary in connection with Dana Foster's death. Foster was a dedicated fifth-grade teacher at Byrd Elementary School in Graniteville, where she had worked for over 13 years within the Aiken County School District. Her death was a shock to the school and the wider community, who remembered her as a vibrant and caring educator. Originally from Illinois, she had moved to Aiken in 1999 with her late husband, Scotty Lynn Foster, and had become deeply involved in her community, both as a teacher and a youth basketball coach.
