On an April afternoon in 2022, Rajae Quick, a 27-year-old Black man from Florence, South Carolina, climbed into a car for a ride that should have been ordinary. He had grown up in the same city whose streets he was now traveling, attending local public schools and building a circle of people who later described him as known and loved by many.
