In the summer of 2022, the life of 17-year-old Gavin Timothy Guffey of Rock Hill, South Carolina, came to a tragic end. On July 27, 2022, the recent Rock Hill High School graduate died by suicide at his home after falling victim to an online sextortion scheme. Gavin, who was known for his love of art, music, and skateboarding, was preparing to attend college with the dream of becoming an art teacher.
The events leading to Gavin’s death began when he was coerced into sending
compromising photos of himself to someone online who he believed was a young woman. This individual, later identified as 24-year-old Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal from Nigeria, then began to extort the teenager, threatening to release the images to his family and friends if he did not send money. The relentless harassment and threats caused Gavin immense emotional distress, culminating in his decision to take his own life. Even after his death, the torment continued as Lawal reportedly attempted to extort Gavin's family, including his father, South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey.
A lengthy and complex investigation involving local, federal, and international law enforcement agencies led to the identification and apprehension of Lawal. In October 2023, a federal grand jury indicted him on multiple charges, including child exploitation resulting in death, distribution of child pornography, coercion and enticement of a minor, cyberstalking resulting in death, and attempted extortion. After extradition proceedings, Lawal was brought from Nigeria to the United States to face the charges. He was arraigned in a federal courthouse in Columbia, South Carolina, where he pled not guilty and was ordered to be held without bond. He faces the possibility of life in prison. In the wake of his son's death, Brandon Guffey championed legislation known as 'Gavin's Law,' which makes sexual extortion a felony in South Carolina.
