In the summer of 2022, the life of 17-year-old Marquel T. Walker was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. On the evening of July 20th, deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department were dispatched to the Nexus Apartments on Fashion Drive in northeast Columbia, South Carolina, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the young male in the parking lot, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the efforts of first responders, Marquel Walker died at the scene. The incident unfolded near the popular Village at Sandhill shopping center, casting a somber shadow over the typically bustling area.
In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement began a homicide investigation, though details about a potential shooter or the motive behind the violence were initially scarce. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots, shattering the evening's calm. As the investigation progressed, it was determined that the fatal encounter stemmed from a robbery attempt that escalated into an exchange of gunfire.
Approximately a month later, the Richland County Sheriff's Department announced a significant breakthrough in the case with the arrest of three suspects. Za'quan Grant, 23, and Na'quan Addison, 22, were both charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A third individual, 19-year-old Jaheim Burroughs, faced charges of murder, armed robbery, obstruction, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. All three men were subsequently booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
