Drequan Greene, a 14-year-old Black male, was a resident of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Neighbors knew his family, and one who had lived on their street for 17 years recalled enjoying their company, saying her husband would have the Greene children over to their house to play and do work.
On the evening of July 25, 2022, the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a shooting and dispatched deputies to a home on Kemmerlin Road just before 6 p.m.
Inside the residence, investigators discovered Drequan, who was deceased. They also found his 40-year-old mother, Latoya Greene, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She survived her injuries. The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office later confirmed that Drequan died from a gunshot wound.
At the scene, authorities identified Drequan’s father, 46-year-old Andre Greene, as the suspect. He was taken into custody and charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. While a motive was not immediately established, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell stated, “There is absolutely no reason in this world for this to have happened. We don’t have a solid motive as of yet, but nothing justifies this. Nothing.” A neighbor who knew Andre Greene described him as a "nice, quiet individual" and expressed shock at the events.
During his first court appearance, a judge denied bond for Andre Greene due to the nature of the charges. If convicted on the murder charge alone, he could face a minimum of 30 years in prison. The case was set to proceed through the court system, with his first mandatory court appearance scheduled for September 26, 2022.
