John Henry Dillingham, aged 46, was the sheriff of Platte County, Missouri, and met a tragic end on August 20, 1900. His death was the result of a violent encounter with Dr. Sterling Price "Sturley" Harrington, a local physician who had embarked on a deadly rampage.
