Cornelius O'Keefe, a 42-year-old police officer with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, tragically lost his life on August 8, 1911. Officer O'Keefe was on duty, searching for an assault suspect when he encountered a man inside a candy store on Olive Street. During this encounter, the man shot Officer O'Keefe in the chest. Due to severe thunderstorms at the time, no other officers heard the gunshot, and it took 15 minutes for them to find him.
