On May 21, 2014, a violent tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of a strip mall located at 13101 New Halls Ferry Road in Florissant, Missouri. Leon Davis, a 27-year-old male, was seated in a vehicle alongside 17-year-old Darrah Lane. The afternoon turned deadly when an argument broke out inside the car involving the two occupants and a third individual seated in the back.
The dispute escalated rapidly, leading the passenger in the rear seat to brandish a firearm and discharge it, striking both Davis and Lane. Police officers responded to the scene around 5:12 p.m. to find both victims suffering from fatal gunshot wounds; despite attempts to render aid, they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly pieced together the events leading up to the double homicide. The inquiry revealed that the shooting was connected to a disagreement during a transaction involving marijuana. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Thomas Oates III, had met the victims in the parking lot and entered the back seat of their vehicle. As the situation inside the car deteriorated, Oates pulled out a weapon and fired, killing both Davis and the teenage driver. Following the shooting, Oates fled the scene but was located shortly thereafter in the nearby city of Jennings, Missouri. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently provided a confession to detectives regarding his involvement in the deaths.
The legal proceedings against Thomas Oates III moved forward with charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. During the trial in St. Louis County, details emerged about the chaotic moments before the shooting, including testimony that the car had rolled backward across the street as the driver attempted to flee. In March 2016, a jury deliberated for approximately three hours before returning guilty verdicts on two counts of felony murder and two counts of armed criminal action. Oates was later sentenced to serve 15 years for the death of Lane and 10 years for the death of Davis, along with additional time for the weapons charges, with the terms ordered to run simultaneously.
