On the early morning of August 10, 2014, the Crossroads Arts District in Kansas City, Missouri, became the scene of a violent ambush that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Black male named Stephon L. Cunningham, Sr. The incident occurred just after 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of Southwest Boulevard and Broadway, a time when the city streets were dark but still active.
Cunningham was traveling in a vehicle northbound on Broadway when the calm of the night was shattered by a coordinated attack.
Two vehicles pulled up alongside the car Cunningham was occupying, flanking it on both the driver and passenger sides. Gunmen from inside both suspect vehicles opened fire simultaneously, riddling the victim's car with bullets in a targeted triple shooting. The barrage of gunfire struck three occupants within the vehicle. Emergency responders rushed the victims to a nearby hospital, but Cunningham’s injuries proved fatal, and he died while undergoing surgery. The other two victims survived the assault; one suffered serious injuries, while the other sustained minor wounds.
In the immediate aftermath of the homicide, investigators from the Kansas City Police Department struggled to gather detailed descriptions of the shooters or the vehicles involved. Despite the brazen nature of the crime, no arrests were made at the time, and the case eventually went cold. Detectives noted that Cunningham had been on parole for two months following a 2011 assault conviction, but no clear link or specific suspect was publicly identified in connection with his murder. Family and friends were left to mourn his loss, holding funeral services at Calvary Chapel COGIC and laying him to rest at XII Gates Cemetery, while the gunmen responsible for the ambush remained at large.
