Mabel Elizabeth 'Rosie' Ellison, a 76-year-old White female resident of Vernon County, Missouri, was found deceased at her rural home near Nevada on October 10, 2014. She had been living with her husband, Herman Ellison, who was also discovered dead at the scene in what authorities quickly determined to be a double homicide. The couple, described by relatives as the pillars of their family, had been shot inside their residence.
The investigation commenced immediately after the discovery, as law enforcement officials from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office sought to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the violence.
Detectives focused their attention on the couple's 19-year-old grandson, Logan Ellison, who had been staying with them. While the victims were found on a Friday morning, investigators believed the shooting occurred the previous day. During questioning, the teenager initially claimed that the deaths were accidental, but inconsistencies in his account led to further scrutiny. He eventually admitted to the killings, revealing that after shooting his grandparents, he disposed of a shell casing, attended school, and went to a football game, acting as though nothing had happened.
Logan Ellison was arrested and charged in connection with the deaths. The motive was linked to a dispute involving the grandparents' vehicle and financial matters. In August 2016, the legal proceedings concluded when he accepted a plea deal. He was sentenced to 22 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree robbery.
