A 50 year old man is shot during an attempted robbery in Des Moines, IA
Ernest Harold Lilly Sr., a 50-year-old World War II Navy veteran, was shot on September 11, 1973, in an attempted robbery outside “Frank’s Place,” a tavern in Des Moines, Iowa. Lilly had been helping the bar owners restock after closing when he went outside to start his car. It was then that an assailant appeared, shot Lilly, and rifled through his pockets, stealing just $6.25. The robber also broke into Lilly's car, stealing a six-pack of beer before fleeing the scene.
