In the quiet, rural outskirts of Harrisonville, Missouri, a heated altercation shattered the late-night peace and left a young man dead. Thirty-year-old William R. Whelan Jr., a resident of Harrisonville, was fatally shot in the early hours of Sunday, February 22, 2015. The incident occurred at a home located in the 24000 block of East 275th Street in Cass County, where Whelan was involved in a dispute with another man.
According to witnesses at the scene, the conflict escalated into a physical confrontation. Whelan reportedly assaulted 65-year-old Peter T. Barbookles, another resident of the house, along with at least one other person. In the midst of the struggle, Barbookles produced a firearm and shot Whelan. When Cass County sheriff's deputies arrived at the residence around 12:30 a.m., they discovered Whelan's body.
Following the shooting, Barbookles was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained during the fight. He was then taken into custody by the Cass County Sheriff's Office for questioning. After providing a statement to investigators, Barbookles was released.
