On the evening of October 29, 2015, a violent incident occurred in the small community of Wardell, Missouri, that resulted in the death of 46-year-old Russell Gray Jr. The events unfolded around 6:00 p.m. at a residence located on the 200 block of Back Street. Gray was outside his home when he was shot in the back. Emergency services responded to the scene, and he was transported to a hospital in Hayti, Missouri, for medical treatment.
despite the efforts to save him, Gray succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the medical facility.
Law enforcement officials, including the Pemiscot County Sheriff’s Office, the Missouri Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control, and the Wardell Police Department, immediately launched an investigation into the shooting. The inquiry quickly focused on a neighbor living in close proximity to the victim. Police arrested 51-year-old Paul Wayne Rudd in connection with the homicide. He was taken into custody and held in the Pemiscot County Jail without bond.
Prosecutors charged Rudd with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Legal proceedings moved forward over the following year, with a trial date eventually set for May 2017 in Pemiscot County before Judge Fred Copeland. The case, which centered on the allegations that Rudd fatally shot his neighbor, proceeded through the judicial system with the defendant represented by a public defender.
