Constable W. J. Mooneyhan of the Wardell Police Department in Missouri was tragically killed on May 3, 1903. The incident occurred at his own home while he was protecting a prisoner. Constable Mooneyhan had arrested a man named D.M. Malone, a self-styled preacher, on charges of living with a woman who was not his wife. After rescuing Malone from an angry mob that had set his house on fire, Mooneyhan took him to his own home for safekeeping, as it was too late to move him to the county jail.
