On the evening of November 12, 2014, a dispute between two men culminated in a fatal shooting at a Shell gas station in Independence, Missouri, leaving 26-year-old Bobby L. Mullins II dead. The incident, which unfolded around 10 p.m. near 40 Highway and Blue Ridge Cutoff, was captured on surveillance video, providing investigators with a clear view of the events that transpired.
The man identified as the shooter, Shawn M.
Hughes, 37, of Independence, arrived at the gas station in a dark-colored truck with a female companion. After the two entered the store to make a purchase and returned to their vehicle, Mullins arrived in a white truck. As Mullins went inside the convenience store, Hughes was seen on video approaching Mullins' vehicle, punching the driver's side window, and searching the interior.
When Mullins exited the store, a brief but violent confrontation ensued in the parking lot. Hughes brandished a handgun and shot Mullins in the head. After the shooting, Hughes took a red backpack from Mullins' truck and fled the scene. Witnesses reported that the shooter fled on foot. Police who were called to the scene found Mullins deceased in the gas station parking lot.
Investigators later located and arrested Hughes, charging him with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. The woman who was with Hughes at the time of the incident was also taken into custody but was later released without charges. She informed police that Hughes and Mullins were acquainted and that Hughes believed Mullins had stolen something from him. She also stated that upon seeing Mullins at the gas station, Hughes had expressed an intention to 'get' him. During his initial court appearance, Hughes claimed to be unaware of the charges against him and made accusations of corruption against the Independence Police Department.
