On November 17, 2015, authorities in Saint Louis, Missouri, were called to a residence in the 4400 block of Evans Avenue, located in the historic Ville neighborhood. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the body of 48-year-old Richard Hill inside the home. At the scene, there were no immediate signs of a violent struggle or obvious trauma that typically characterizes a homicide, leading police to initially suspect that the cause of death was a drug overdose.
The nature of the
investigation shifted drastically following a medical examination of the body. During the autopsy, the medical examiner discovered that Hill had actually sustained a fatal gunshot wound that had gone unnoticed during the preliminary inspection at the scene. Consequently, the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department reclassified the case from a suspected overdose to a homicide, launching a murder investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Despite the reclassification and subsequent inquiry, public records and reports from the time did not immediately identify a suspect or announce an arrest in connection with Hill's death. The case was added to the city's list of gun violence victims for that year, highlighting the challenges investigators face when initial scene indicators do not point clearly to foul play.
