In Arnold, Missouri, on March 31, 2016, 82-year-old Irma Hipp was fatally shot inside her home, an event that would lead to legal proceedings against her husband. The incident occurred during the early morning hours, around 5:00 a.m., when an argument reportedly broke out between Irma and her 83-year-old husband, Edwin Hipp. According to statements later provided to investigators, the dispute escalated when Irma allegedly retrieved a handgun from a recliner in the living room.
Edwin Hipp told authorities that he struggled with his wife, eventually wresting the weapon from her control before shooting her twice.
Following the shooting, law enforcement officials noted that Edwin Hipp did not immediately contact emergency medical services for assistance. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody, facing serious charges related to his wife's death. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action.
The case concluded nearly three years later in the court system. In December 2018, Edwin Hipp pleaded guilty to the charge of second-degree murder. By February 2019, at the age of 85, he appeared for sentencing. As part of a plea agreement, a 20-year prison term was suspended, and he was instead sentenced to five years of probation. The terms of his probation required him to remain under house arrest, only permitting him to leave his residence for specific medical and legal appointments.
