On the evening of July 3, 2020, a violent encounter in Caldwell County, Kentucky, abruptly ended the life of 24-year-old James Bannister of Eddyville. The incident unfolded in the 100 block of Wood Lane, where Bannister was shot with a handgun at approximately 7:30 p.m. He was rushed to Jennie Stuart Medical Center, but the severity of his injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them at the hospital.
The investigation into the shooting, led by the Kentucky State Police, quickly
pointed to 43-year-old Joe R. Curnell of Dawson Springs as the alleged assailant. In the early hours of the following morning, around 12:43 a.m. on July 4, 2020, authorities located and arrested Curnell at his residence in Dawson Springs. He was subsequently lodged in the Caldwell County Detention Center.
Curnell faced a slate of serious charges stemming from the incident, including murder, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and tampering with physical evidence. In September 2020, a grand jury indicted him on these charges. While incarcerated, Curnell faced an additional charge of promoting contraband in September 2020, after he was allegedly found with a sharp object that could be used as a weapon. The legal proceedings saw twists and turns, including a plea agreement that Curnell ultimately rejected in September 2021. A new trial date was set for September 2022.
