On the evening of May 22, 2016, a tragedy unfolded in the downtown district of Saint Louis, Missouri, involving 21-year-old Brandi Hill. The young female victim was navigating the city streets near the intersection of 11th Street and Washington Avenue, a bustling area often frequented by residents and visitors alike. She was accompanied in her vehicle by her nine-month-old daughter and a pregnant cousin, traveling east on Washington Avenue when their night took a violent turn.
Around 10:30 p.m., two men approached the vehicle on foot and confronted the occupants, announcing a robbery that would quickly escalate into a fatal encounter.
During the carjacking, one of the assailants produced a firearm and shot Hill, leaving her critically injured in the street where she would later be pronounced dead. The suspects then seized control of the vehicle, fleeing the scene with Hill's infant daughter still strapped into her car seat in the back. In a harrowing sequence of events that followed the shooting, the carjackers drove to the intersection of Angelica and 22nd Street in north St. Louis. There, they removed the car seat with the baby inside and threw it from the vehicle onto the ground before abandoning the car nearby. Miraculously, the infant was discovered unharmed and was eventually reunited with family members, while the pregnant cousin also survived the ordeal without serious physical injury.
Law enforcement launched an immediate investigation into the homicide, utilizing surveillance footage to identify the individuals responsible. Authorities eventually identified two primary suspects connected to the crime. One suspect, 19-year-old Ross Randolph of Belleville, Illinois, surrendered to police shortly after the incident. He faced charges related to the carjacking and murder. The second suspect, identified as 21-year-old Devonte Gates, was located days later by U.S. Marshals in Washington Park, Illinois. When authorities attempted to apprehend him, a confrontation ensued, resulting in Gates being shot and killed by law enforcement officers at the scene.
