On September 8, 2016, the community of Malden, Missouri, was shaken by the violent death of 39-year-old Walter Shonta Lee-Hill, known locally as Walter Lee. The male victim was discovered having suffered fatal injuries from gun violence, prompting local authorities to launch an immediate homicide investigation. For months, the case remained an active inquiry as detectives from the Malden Police Department and other area agencies worked to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
The investigation continued into the following year, with law enforcement following leads that eventually pointed toward suspects outside the immediate Malden area. In late April 2017, authorities announced a significant breakthrough in the cold case. The Malden Police Chief confirmed that two individuals had been identified and taken into custody in connection with Lee's death.
Larry Thornton, a resident of Portageville, and Brianna Bonaparte, of Sikeston, were arrested and faced serious allegations related to the incident. Both suspects were charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal action. The arrests brought a new phase to the legal proceedings, shedding light on the circumstances of the robbery-homicide that had claimed Lee's life the previous autumn.
