In the early morning hours of a fall day in Kansas City, Missouri, the life of 23-year-old Marcus Mondaine, a male, came to a tragic and violent end. On October 1, 2016, Mondaine was fatally shot as he lay sleeping in an apartment. The promising young man, a student and basketball player for the University of St. Mary, was visiting his girlfriend at her home. The tranquility of the morning was shattered when the woman's ex-boyfriend, 21-year-old Damon M.
Hammons, forced his way into the residence.
Driven by a conflict with his ex-girlfriend, with whom he shared a one-year-old daughter, Hammons confronted her in the hallway before proceeding to the bedroom where Mondaine was asleep beside the young child. In a sudden act of violence, Hammons fired a single shot, striking and killing Mondaine. The harrowing event unfolded in the presence of the child, who was in the bed next to the victim.
Following the shooting, Hammons reportedly turned his attention to his ex-girlfriend, questioning if she would report him to the authorities. He then fled the scene, leaving behind a scene of devastation. In the immediate aftermath, law enforcement identified Hammons as the suspect, and the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against him for second-degree murder and armed criminal action. However, Hammons remained at large, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
For nearly a year, Damon M. Hammons evaded capture. It wasn't until September 27, 2017, that he was finally apprehended and taken into custody. His flight from justice came to an end, and the legal process to hold him accountable for the death of Marcus Mondaine could begin.
On May 29, 2018, Damon M. Hammons pleaded guilty to the charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. By admitting his guilt, he accepted responsibility for the senseless act of violence that cut short a young life full of potential. Subsequently, on July 13, 2018, a judge sentenced Hammons to a term of 23 years in prison for his crimes. The sentencing marked the culmination of a lengthy and painful chapter for the family and friends of Marcus Mondaine, bringing a measure of closure to a case that began with a sudden and tragic loss.
