On November 17, 2016, the community of Kirksville, Missouri, witnessed the culmination of a devastating week for one local family. Echo Leanne Welte, a 41-year-old female, was staying at the Days Inn on South Baltimore Street amidst divorce proceedings from her husband, Danny Charles Welte Sr. The estranged couple had spent the day mourning the loss of their 19-year-old son, Danny Jr., who had died by suicide just four days earlier.
Hours after laying their son to rest, the pair engaged in a prolonged and heated argument inside a vehicle in the hotel parking lot.
As the confrontation escalated late that Thursday evening, a bystander named James Dykes noticed the vehicle’s lights flashing and heard Echo screaming for help. Dykes rushed to intervene, pulling Danny Welte away from the car and attempting to escort Echo toward the safety of the hotel lobby. Danny Welte, armed with a handgun, pursued his wife. Investigators later revealed that his weapon jammed four times as he chased her, but he eventually cleared the malfunction and fired a single fatal shot into the back of Echo's head just before she could reach the building. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Danny Welte fled the parking lot immediately after the shooting but surrendered to authorities approximately 90 minutes later outside the Kirksville Police Department. He was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. During the subsequent legal proceedings, the defense portrayed the incident as a crime of passion committed by a grieving father who had just buried his child, while prosecutors highlighted the ruthless nature of the chase and the execution-style killing.
In February 2020, a jury in Adair County found Danny Welte guilty of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The following July, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder charge, with an additional consecutive ten-year sentence for the armed criminal action conviction. Echo Leanne Welte, born on August 21, 1975, left behind three surviving children and a stepson, her life cut short in a tragedy that compounded the family's already profound grief.
