Kristen 'Kadie' Campbell Johnson was a 33-year-old female attorney residing in Kirksville, Missouri, known for her dedicated legal work and active role in her community. She served as the city attorney for Unionville and maintained private law practices across Kirksville, Milan, and Unionville. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, she had built a reputation as a respected professional and a devoted mother to her three children.
Her life was tragically cut short on January 5, 2014, in a violent incident at her home that shocked the local residents and the legal community she served.
The events unfolded in the early morning hours when the Adair County Sheriff's Office received a report of shots fired at the Johnson residence, located just south of Kirksville. Law enforcement officers, along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, responded to the scene around 1:30 a.m. Upon entering the home, authorities discovered the bodies of Kristen and her husband, 36-year-old Riley Johnson. Kristen was found in the garage, while Riley was discovered in a nearby hallway.
The investigation, led by Sheriff Robert Hardwick and supported by the Adair County Coroner, determined that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. Autopsy results revealed that Kristen had been shot seven times, while Riley sustained a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Several firearms were recovered from the scene. Despite the violence of the event, the couple’s three young children and two other adults who were present in the house at the time were physically unharmed.
Due to the death of the primary suspect, Riley Johnson, at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the case. Authorities concluded that Riley had shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself, effectively closing the possibility of a criminal trial.
