In Kansas City, Missouri, the life of 19-year-old African American Dajanna Marie Haislip was tragically cut short following a violent incident in the autumn of 2017. A devoted mother of two and a Certified Nursing Assistant who had earned her certification through the Full Employment Council, Haislip was known for her vibrant spirit and dedication to her family.
Her untimely death added to a devastating year for her loved ones, who had already suffered the loss of her young nephew to gun violence just months prior.
On the night of October 25, 2017, police officers were dispatched to the intersection of 45th Street and Elmwood Avenue after receiving reports of a shooting at approximately 9:54 p.m. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Haislip lying in the street, suffering from a severe gunshot wound. Witnesses at the scene, who were fortunate to escape uninjured, reported that two unknown male assailants had opened fire on the group before fleeing the area in vehicles. Haislip was critically injured and immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite fighting for her life for over a month, Haislip succumbed to her injuries on November 30, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospice Care. The investigation into her murder has remained active, with the Kansas City Police Department listing the case among its unsolved homicides. Detectives have sought the public’s assistance in identifying the two individuals described by witnesses, but as of the latest available reports, no arrests have been made and no specific suspects have been publicly named in connection with her direct killing.
