The festivities took a violent turn in the early morning hours when a confrontation reportedly arose between the victims and other attendees. Upon leaving the party around 1:00 a.m., Lopez departed in a Ford Taurus alongside several other young people, including 16-year-old Armando Diaz. As their vehicle traveled away from the venue, they were pursued by a silver sport utility vehicle, described possibly as a Honda CRV. The occupants of the pursuing SUV opened fire on the Taurus using what was believed to be an assault rifle. The chase culminated in a violent crash as the victims attempted to evade the gunfire.
