A man is shot and killed while gambling inside a home
In the midst of a violent crime wave gripping Indianapolis, 31-year-old Arnold Eugene 'Cubby' Fitzgerald, a male, found himself in a perilous situation on November 15, 2007. Inside a residence on the west side, the lively atmosphere of a gathering quickly turned tragic. Fitzgerald was shot and killed, his body discovered in a back doorway of the home located in the 3300 block of West 10th Street near Tibbs Avenue. Another man, 27-year-old Terrance Williams, was also wounded in the attack, sustaining a gunshot to his hand.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting. Friends and family mourned the loss of Fitzgerald, remembering his bright personality during a memorial service held at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding the homicide, it became clear this was not a simple case. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Coy Daniels was convicted for his role in Fitzgerald's death and received a 55-year prison sentence. Samuel Fancher was also found guilty for his involvement and was similarly sentenced to a 55-year term. Charges against Lawaine Smith were ultimately reduced to robbery, resulting in a 40-year sentence.
