On the night of February 18, 2019, violence erupted in Sikeston, Missouri, claiming the life of 24-year-old Marcus Allen Dixon Jr. It was around 11:30 p.m. when Dixon, a male resident of the area, was targeted and fatally shot. The incident occurred late in the evening, leaving the community and his family, including his young son and siblings, to mourn the sudden loss of a man described as a laid-back and protective father and brother.
Investigators quickly began piecing together the
events leading up to the murder, focusing their attention on the movements of a suspect named Cornelius Perkins. Witnesses and evidence gathered by law enforcement placed Perkins in the vicinity of the crime scene. Earlier that evening, around 9:30 p.m., Perkins had been observed attempting to forcibly enter a nearby home while carrying a distinctive 9mm Hi-Point handgun. Shortly after leaving that residence, phone records indicated that Perkins contacted an acquaintance to ask if they wanted to 'hit a lick,' a phrase understood to mean committing a robbery. The acquaintance declined, but Perkins remained in the area where Dixon was ultimately killed.
Police arrested Cornelius Perkins on February 28, 2019, following a homicide investigation that linked him to the weapon used in Dixon's death. Evidence presented at trial revealed that five days after the shooting, Perkins attempted to dispose of the specific 9mm handgun identified as the murder weapon. Although Perkins initially claimed to police that he was in Charleston, Missouri, at the time of the shooting, witness testimony and cell phone tower data contradicted his alibi, placing him firmly in Sikeston.
The case proceeded to trial, where a jury found Perkins guilty of second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The court handed down a significant sentence, ordering Perkins to serve consecutive prison terms totaling 50 years for the murder and weapon charges, ensuring he would remain incarcerated for decades as a consequence of the night that ended Marcus Dixon’s life.
