In a tragic turn of events stemming from a family dispute, 63-year-old Frank S. Gilmore, a male, was shot and killed on Sunday, October 13, 2019, in Raytown, a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. The incident, which unfolded in the front yard of a residence in the 8800 block of East 85th Street, was the culmination of a heated argument over a family dog.
According to witnesses, Gilmore had been arguing with his 29-year-old nephew, Ebe Nelson, regarding the treatment of the animal.
Nelson had a history of aggressive behavior and had been previously told to stay away from the residence. During the confrontation, Gilmore armed himself with a baseball bat for protection as Nelson's behavior escalated. After Nelson initially left the scene threatening to come back with a firearm, Gilmore urged a woman inside the house to call the police.
Nelson soon returned with a gun and shot Gilmore, striking him in the leg and grazing his face. A woman at the scene pleaded with Nelson to stop as she tried to administer first aid. However, Nelson proceeded to Gilmore's truck, retrieved an M16-style rifle, and fired multiple shots at his uncle at close range.
Following the shooting, Nelson fled to a nearby home in the 8500 block of Kentucky Avenue and barricaded himself inside. This led to an hours-long standoff with police. Ultimately, Nelson surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of his uncle, Frankie Gilmore. Prosecutors requested a bond of $300,000.
