On October 31, 2019, law enforcement officers in Jefferson City, Missouri, responded to a residence in the 1900 block of Rolling Hills Drive following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the body of 18-year-old Marquise Conley, a male resident of the area, who had sustained multiple fatal gunshot wounds. The initial investigation indicated that the violence may have been precipitated by a dispute involving the presence of another individual at the home, leading to a
swift inquiry by local detectives to identify those responsible for the homicide.
In the days and months following the incident, investigators identified two teenagers as the primary suspects in the case. Devin Schrimpf, who was 17 years old at the time, was arrested and initially charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Court documents revealed that Schrimpf had allegedly made statements to a witness indicating his intent to 'shoot the place up' after learning that another male was inside the residence. A second suspect, Grant Deppe, also 17, was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and tampering with physical evidence. Authorities alleged that Deppe played a role in causing the victim's death and was responsible for concealing the firearm used in the commission of the crime.
As the legal proceedings advanced, significant developments occurred regarding the prosecution of the accused. Devin Schrimpf eventually entered a plea agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to the lesser charges of first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, rather than facing the original murder charge. Under the terms of the deal, the defense and prosecution agreed to a sentencing recommendation that would not exceed a specific term of years in the Missouri Department of Corrections. Grant Deppe was certified to be tried as an adult, facing serious felony charges for his alleged involvement in the shooting and the subsequent attempt to hide evidence from law enforcement.
