On the afternoon of September 7, 2020, violence erupted in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of a young local resident. Darrell McClendon, a 23-year-old male, was discovered by authorities on the front lawn of a residence in the 1400 block of Temple Place following reports of a shooting. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident.
First responders rushed him to a nearby hospital in hopes of saving his life, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, marking another tragic loss for the community.
Homicide detectives launched an investigation that eventually spanned several years before yielding significant breakthroughs. In October 2022, authorities announced charges against a suspect in connection with the killing. The investigation identified two men, 35-year-old Reuben Smith and 29-year-old Jerry Wafford, as the individuals responsible for McClendon's death. Both suspects were initially charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and armed criminal action as prosecutors built their case against them.
The legal proceedings culminated in January 2025, just as the trials for the two men were scheduled to begin. Instead of facing a jury, Smith and Wafford reached plea agreements with the prosecutor's office, admitting to their roles in the fatal event. The charges were amended from first-degree murder to voluntary manslaughter, leading to the dismissal of other counts. Both men were subsequently sentenced to five years in state prison. During the sentencing hearing, it was noted that McClendon’s mother expressed gratitude that the men accepted responsibility for her son's death, hopeful that they would use the opportunity to make better choices in the future.
