On October 1, 2020, authorities in New Madrid, Missouri, launched an investigation into the untimely death of 19-year-old male Donta Lamar Grissom. Police officers were dispatched to a local residence in the early morning hours regarding a shooting incident. Upon their arrival, they discovered Grissom inside the home, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Despite the emergency response, he was pronounced deceased at the scene, marking a tragic end for the young resident of the southeast Missouri town.
Law enforcement officers at the residence encountered George William Dawson III, a 31-year-old New Madrid resident, who was promptly identified as the primary suspect. During the initial investigation, Dawson reportedly told detectives that he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting from his military service in Afghanistan and expressed uncertainty about whether he had been taking his prescribed medication correctly. However, court documents indicated that witnesses present at the time of the shooting stated Grissom had not been threatening Dawson prior to the violence. Dawson was taken into custody at the scene and subsequently held in the Mississippi County Jail.
The legal proceedings against Dawson initially included charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Nearly two years after the incident, in June 2022, the case was resolved through a plea agreement in the New Madrid County Circuit Court. Dawson appeared before Judge Benjamin Lewis and entered a guilty plea to the reduced charge of second-degree murder. As part of the agreement, the state dismissed the charge of armed criminal action. Consequently, Dawson was sentenced to serve fifteen years in the custody of the Missouri Department of Corrections for his role in Grissom's death.
