On January 8, 2021, a violent incident occurred in the Spanish Lake area of St. Louis County, Missouri, resulting in the death of 51-year-old Denise Gray Edwards. She was driving a vehicle along the 11000 block of Lilac Avenue during the evening hours with a passenger, identified as 19-year-old Brian Thurman. As the vehicle was in motion, Thurman produced a firearm and shot Edwards.
Following the shooting, the vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a tree before coming to a stop.
Law enforcement officers from the St. Louis County Police Department responded to the scene of the crash. Upon arrival, they discovered that Thurman had also sustained a gunshot wound, which investigators determined to be self-inflicted immediately after he attacked Edwards. Both individuals were pronounced dead, and police subsequently classified the case as a murder-suicide.
Because the sole suspect, Thurman, died at the scene, no arrests were made, and there were no subsequent criminal proceedings or trials. Detectives recovered a firearm from the vehicle, but authorities did not publicly disclose a motive for the shooting or elaborate on the specific nature of the relationship between Edwards and Thurman beyond their presence in the car together. The investigation was closed following the determination that the shooter was deceased.
