On January 8, 2021, a violent incident occurred in the Spanish Lake area of St. Louis County, Missouri, resulting in the death of 51-year-old Denise Gray Edwards. She was driving a vehicle along the 11000 block of Lilac Avenue during the evening hours with a passenger, identified as 19-year-old Brian Thurman. As the vehicle was in motion, Thurman produced a firearm and shot Edwards. Following the shooting, the vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a tree before coming to a stop.
